On this section of the Rhine there are 5 bunkers of the so-called West Wall. The Siegfried Line ...
The Siegfried Line, also known as the Siegfried Line by the Western Allies, was a military defense system along the western border of the German Empire, spread over about 630 km and consisting of over 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and countless trenches and anti-tank barriers. It ran from Kleve on the Dutch border in a southerly direction to Grenzach-Wyhlen on the Swiss border.
Hitler had the facility, which had both military and propaganda value, planned from 1936 and built between 1938 and 1940. Shortly before, during the occupation of the Rhineland on March 7, 1936, contrary to the requirements of the Versailles Peace Treaty, the areas on both sides of the Rhine that had been demilitarized by the Reich as a result of the First World War were occupied by Wehrmacht troops.
