The ascent to this marking of the 50th degree of latitude north through the vineyards is difficult, the reward is a fantastic view of the Rheingau."The 50th degree of latitude runs right through the middle of the southern slope of the Johannisberg in the Rheingau. Below the castle on the Johannisberg a stele was erected that marks the 50th degree of latitude. The Johannisberg, where the Benedict family used to reside, is associated worldwide with Riesling The monks cleared the mountain and planted vines there. The monastery was dissolved in 1563. The abbots had a castle built as a summer residence in place of the monastery. In the 1970s, the Oetker family of industrialists acquired the castle and winery. For a long time, the 50th degree of latitude was considered the northern limit of quality viticulture. Due to ongoing global warming, the absolute limit of viticulture in Europe is now reaching further north."Source: deutsche-glühfeuer.de/themen/50-höhengrad.html
