The church is a late Gothic cruciform church from 1500, unique in Goeree-Overflakkee because of a transept. With its tower and small cemetery, surrounded by the church moat, the church forms a charming whole. The area now called Nieuwe-Tonge was already mentioned in 1284 and was called Grijsoord. The first owners were monastic orders.
