NORDHEIM - The Nordheim district of Biblis has an island on its own doorstep with the mulberry meadow, even if you have to share this island with your neighbors in Lampertheim. The mulberry meadow is one of the most beautiful and largest Rhine islands on the Hessian Upper Rhine. Many meadows are traditionally mowed twice a year and not fertilized. This created a great diversity of species with a colorful display of flowers.

The Maulbeeraue extends between the Maulbeerauer Altrhein and the Rhine. It forms a small Rhine island in the Hessian district of Bergstrasse. To be more precise: between Rhine kilometers 443.8 and 449.1. The northern third is part of the municipality of Biblis (district of Nordheim), the two-thirds to the south belong to the city of Lampertheim (district of Hofheim). Opposite is the Nibelungen city of Worms.

The mulberry meadow is under nature protection and is a Natura 2000 area. Information boards tell us more about this gem on the Hessian Upper Rhine. For us, the start of the round is clockwise in Nordheim at the sports field on the L3261.

Through fields we reach the Maulbeerauer Altrhein. The Maulbeeraue is a wonderful local recreation destination and enchants with its meadow landscape. Because the meadows are mowed twice a year and not fertilized, a pleasing variety of plants with colorful flowers has established itself here.

The Natura area measures around 420ha.

The southern tip of the Maulbeeraue is the railway line that connects Worms with Hofheim. Now we walk with the Rhine on our left and enjoy the picturesque meadow landscape. There is also a historic fountain on the Mulberry meadow and the last mulberry trees can be seen around it.

Historically, finds indicate that there was a Celtic Rhine crossing here as early as 500 BC, connecting Nordheim with Herrnsheim. It is said to have been a place for gatherings or camps for counts and their entourage during the Carolingian period. The "Mulberauwe" was first mentioned in a document in 1427. The fact that the former mulberry forest no longer stands is probably due to the French. Revolutionary troops felled firewood here around 1795.

Mulberries look like oblong blackberries and are edible. The trees have good growing conditions, where wine grows, for example, it is rather sheltered and warm, the soil is loose, nutritious and rich in lime.
