The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso is located on a small plain between the two streams of Maremola and Botassano, between Monte Grosso and the sea, in Pietra Ligure.

The current church has a historical origin that comes from afar. The primitive chapel that housed the graceful fresco depicting the Madonna and Child, now venerated on the main altar of the sanctuary, had a beginning that has been lost over the centuries.

At the time of Roman domination, there was a settlement of Ligurians in the area who had built a temple dedicated to the huntress Diana. In the area of Soccorso there was a bloody battle between Ligurians and Romans, defeated by the latter.

When Christianity became the state religion at the time of Constantine, the Temple of Diana was converted into a Christian church by the Bishop S. Calimero of Milan, who had a baptismal font built there, the first in the region.

The Bishop of Genoa, Diogenes, had the sacred building enlarged up to 15 feet in 390 and dedicated it to the Holy Spirit and the transit of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In the Carolingian period the church was recognized as the parish church of Pietra. It served as a baptismal church for the village of Pietra and for the inhabitants of the Maremola valley.

It was always considered the mother church of the other churches built in the surrounding villages until the year 870, when this title passed to the new church of Saints Nicolò and Sebastiano, built in the village of Pietra.
