The Rissbach tunnel has a length of almost 7 km and is carried out under the Isar in the direction of Walchensee by means of a culvert.

The natural drainage of the Walchensee via the Niedernach and the Jachen into the Isar was blocked. Instead, the water of the Walchensee is transferred via a tunnel to the Walchensee power plant and fed into the Loisach via the Kochelsee.

On the stretch between Kochelsee and Wolfratshausen, where the Loisach flows into the Isar, the river bed of the Loisach had to be expanded extensively in order to be able to absorb the additional water volumes from the Isar drainage.

The Walchensee power plant only works in the interaction of a large number of interventions in river and lake landscapes, the Walchensee power plant system.

The way the water rushes through is breathtaking. It is interesting how water can be a source of energy and also an energy storage device at the same time.

It is channeled through the 7 km long Rissbach tunnel into the Bavarian Walchensee. This, together with the lower Kochelsee, is used to generate electricity for Bavaria.
