In honor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, construction of the basilica began around 1875. On May 10, 1883, the church was made a “Basilica Minor” by Pope Leo XIII, the first in the Netherlands.
Sittard Basilica is definitely worth a visit, not only for its devotion to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, but also because the church is a surviving example of 19th century neo-Gothic architecture.

The church was founded for the purpose of the Sacred Heart Devotion established in Sittard in 1867 and replaced the much too small chapel of the Ursuline Monastery for this purpose. The construction was made possible in part by donations from all over the Netherlands. The foundation stone was laid on June 2, 1875. This marble stone, which came from the Catacomb of Saint Callixtus, was donated by Pope Pius IX. Construction was completed in 1877 and on 5 July 1879 Joannes Paredis, the bishop of Roermond, was able to consecrate the church. In 1883 the church was elevated to a basilica (basilica minor) by Pope Leo XIII, as the first church in the Netherlands.
