The Diemel River rises on the edge of the Rothaar Mountains in northern Hesse, near the border with Westphalia. The Diemel River's source lies between the Upland and Sauerland mountain regions, about 2 km southwest of Usseln. The Diemel River initially flows through the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, is dammed in the Diemel Dam, and reaches North Rhine-Westphalia, forming part of the border. Beyond the dam, the Diemel River flows through the Hochsauerland district and the Höxter district. After 110.5 kilometers, it flows into the Weser as a left tributary in Bad Karlshafen at Weser kilometer 44.7.
