In 1610, the duke of Brabant granted a petition to build a new dike around Den Dungen against flooding from the (Beerse) Maas, the Aa and the Dommel. But at the Keer, where the territory of Sint-Michielsgestel began, the dike ended. So the dike was not of much use. However, that changed when a dike was also built on Gestel's territory in 1649, which connected to the Dungense dike. This is how the ring dike was created that had to protect the entire village against water. The wheels show that this has failed several times

Around 1629, this ring dike was part of the circumvallation line of Frederik Hendrik van Oranje.

Today, cyclists and walkers make extensive use of the area. From the dike they have a view of two landscape types: the inner polder of Den Dungen, with its small-scale enclosed ash landscape, and the outer polder around Kloosterstraat. That area is an open and low-lying wet area with fields and grasslands.
