During harsh winters, the horses are fed straw. They are also under constant observation, and if an animal becomes ill, a veterinarian is called. The wild horses live in a herd of approximately 60 adult animals with a lead stallion and mare. However, the lead stallion must be replaced occasionally to prevent inbreeding. This last happened in 2019.
