'La Mareta de la Villa' has its origins in the island's indigenous past. At the time it was a building used to store water from the scant rainfall to ensure the survival of the people of Villa de Teguise. Each year the cabildo (the municipal government) decided how the water should be used by the residents or by the animals and appointed a guardian, the maretero, to see that the water was used wisely. The boundaries of the Mareta have been widened and strengthened over the years and it was not the only of these structures, but it was the most important, both for its size and for its location in Teguise, the island's capital. When the area was later connected to the public water network, the Mareta fell into disuse in the second half of the 20th century and the infrastructure was dismantled. Only the name survives today. In 1976 the Mareta was declared a national heritage site.

Short addition: most visitors should be familiar with this square because the traditional 'Sunday market' has been taking place here for decades.

The La Mareta water reservoir dates back to the times of the island's indigenous people.
