During the Great War, after the defeat of Caporetto, several British divisions were sent to the plateau to flank the Italian army against the Austro-Hungarians, who were trying to break through towards the Po Valley: each division was followed by a battalion of pioneers made up of specially trained for the construction of field defenses. From April 1918, the 9th Staffordhire Battalion garrisoned and fortified the entire area of Mount Lemerle with trenches, shelters and this reinforced concrete bunker which, in the rear, served as a command center.
