In 1144 the property of the Siegburg Abbey in Herkenrath was documented. The Romanesque components of the church, the four-storey tower and the basilica two-nave nave originate from this period. In 1224 the patronage right of the church was transferred to the Order of St. John by the knight Theodoricus de Dorendorp.
