Between 1989 and 1991, Michaelerplatz was extensively archaeologically investigated. In addition to medieval and modern remains, the excavations also uncovered remains of the Roman camp suburb (Canabae).

In 1990/1991 city archaeologist Ortolf Harl found building remains from various centuries during excavations. The foundations of a large, tower-like grave monument and Roman houses (with underfloor heating, wall heating and wall paintings) date from the second to fifth centuries (up to seven reconstruction phases can be proven). Harl interpreted the archaeological remains as the entertainment district of the Vindobona military camp.

A number of remarkable buildings are grouped around Michaelerplatz. In addition to the Hofburg (Michaelerplatz 1, with a dome over the passage to the Burgtor), the Looshaus (Michaelerplatz 3), which was built at the beginning of the 20th century based on a design by Adolf Loos and was heavily controversial at the time, should be mentioned. The so-called Palais Herberstein (Michaelerplatz 2), a neo-baroque Zinspalais instead of the old Palais Dietrichstein-Herberstein, tries to adapt to the style of the Michaelertrakt. The Michaelerkirche can be regarded as one of the most historically and culturally significant church buildings in Vienna. Historically assigned to it are the Great Michaelerhaus (Michaelerplatz 4) built by the Barnabites, built in 1720 by Giovanni Battista Maderna, and the Kleine Michaelerhaus (Michaelerplatz 6), built in 1732. The church in between bears the number 5.
