Tips

    Unfortunately it wasn't like that.

  • Since its construction (1493-1510), the Protestant Alexander Church at the upper end of the main street has been one of the landmarks of the city of Zweibrücken.
Although it was destroyed several times, the church was always rebuilt.
According to tradition, the Duke of Zweibrücken, Alexander (1490-1514), had this first large city church built in gratitude for his safe return home from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
The late Gothic, imposing hall church became the central place of worship in the city of Zweibrücken and represented an important step in the development of Zweibrücken into a
    residential city.
Due to the looting and destruction of the church, including in the Thirty Years' War, the French Reunion Wars, the French Revolution and the Second World War, this important Wittelsbach burial place no longer exists today.
Due to the multiple destructions, the church changed its appearance several times over the centuries: for example, in 1756 the Zweibrücken court architect Johann Christian Ludwig Hautt built a new, baroque church tower, which shaped the appearance of the building until the Second World War. After 1945, however, the church was rebuilt with a simpler tower that was not true to the original. Between 1904 and 1911, the Alexander Church was completely renovated by the Berlin architect Carl Doflein and, due to its magnificent Gothic net vault, was one of the most important late Gothic churches in southwest Germany until its destruction in 1945. Like the entire Zweibrücken city center, the Alexander Church was completely destroyed by a bomb attack on March 14, 1945. After the war, it was rebuilt in a much simpler form by Otto Stahl and Richard Hummel and inaugurated on June 26, 1955. The division into three naves was retained inside, but the elaborate vaulted ceiling was replaced by a simple coffered ceiling.kuladig.de/Objektansicht/KLD-274562
