The oldest mention of this village can be found in a late 11th-century copy of a charter, which was drawn up between 918 and 948. The text, concerning a list of possessions of the St. Maartenskerk in Utrecht, reads: "insulam.. . iuxta Buosinhem qui propior ville Riswic". The name is first found around 777-866 in a list of goods and serfs of the Utrecht church.

The meaning and origin of the village name is explained as follows: 'chem' is derived from 'hem', which means residence in Old Dutch. 'Beuse' is a corruption of Boso, a personal name, which means 'enemy' in Old Germanic. That's another derivation of 'bosi', which means hostile, think of 'angry'. Loosely translated, Beusichem would then mean: 'dwelling place of (the family of) Boso' or 'dwelling place of the enemy'.

A significant part of the place is part of the nationally protected face of Beusichem.
