Steinbach an der Haide was probably founded around 1200 by Benedictine monks from the Cella monastery, today's Probstzella. Around 1250 they built a chapel in honor of St. Elizabeth of Thuringia (1207-1231). After frequent changes of rule, Steinbach came into the possession of the knight Friedrich von Thüna. He was friends with Martin Luther and introduced the Reformation in his dominions. During the Thirty Years' War the church was plundered and burned by the Kronachers and rebuilt from 1635-1639. During the renovation of the church in 1963, medieval wall paintings were discovered in the sanctuary, which were uncovered at considerable expense by 1964. These valuable art treasures probably date from the period 1250 to 1400. The oldest frescoes can be found on the east wall behind the altar. These probably date from the time the church was built. The court scene is shown at the top left.
The church's altar, pulpit and baptismal font date from between 1636 and 1696, after the church was rebuilt after being destroyed. The pulpit shows Jesus with 11 of his disciples on his fields. The paintings look like simple folk art in their way. In contrast to the pulpit, the baptismal font appears to have come from a good artist's workshop.
