The Waldsee Lauer was created in 1970 as a gravel pit and is located north-east of the Cospudener See. The Lauer is a small natural paradise between the lake and the Floßgraben and is crossed from the Cospuden lock if you want to paddle towards the city center. The "Waldsee Lauer" was very popular as a bathing lake, but at the end of the 1980s it was to be prepared for open-cast lignite mining. In the spring of 1989, access to the lake was cordoned off and entry was prohibited. People ignored this and continued to bathe and sunbathe. The police often checked the naked or scantily clad bathers and asked for their ID cards. When that didn't help either, the access to the lake was destroyed in many places and the bathing areas were filled in. The bathers thus resisted the destruction of the bathing lake until the autumn of 1989. Then came the autumn of 1989 with the Peaceful Revolution, the “Stop Cospuden 1990”, the lake was preserved and was not sacrificed to coal.
