n 1180, at the time of Barbarossa, Eberhard Waro von Hagen-Husilstam received part of the Dreieich area as an imperial fief. In the Bieberaue, surrounded by water and swamp, he built his moated castle, which probably served as a watchtower in the imperial protective forest. This in turn could be an explanation for the name "Bannturm", which is still used today.

The Bannturm (Bann Tower) contains parts of its walls made of humped red sandstone blocks, presumably dating back to the earliest times of the castle's history, as well as hewn stone and bricks from various eras. The tower, with its strong vaults and cellar, was accessed via a spiral staircase at the southeast corner. It was divided into several floors and once had a gabled roof. The tower also served as a prison for a time.
