Construction of the Cranzahl dam began in 1949 and was one of the first projects of the GDR's reconstruction years. Construction work was completed within just three years. The dam consists of an earthen dam with a clay apron as an internal seal.The approximately 28-hectare reservoir supplies raw water for the drinking water supply of the towns of Annaberg-Buchholz, Oberwiesenthal and surrounding areas and also serves as flood protection.
