The dam of the dam is a broken in plan ground ash dam with inclined inner seal of clay. It is a large dam according to the ICOLD criterion. The dammed waters are the Lampertsbach and the Moritzbach.

Construction of the Cranzahl dam began in 1949 and was one of the first projects of the GDR's reconstruction years. Construction work was completed within just three years. The dam consists of an earthen dam with a clay apron as an internal seal.

The approximately 28-hectare reservoir supplies raw water for the drinking water supply of the towns of Annaberg-Buchholz, Oberwiesenthal and surrounding areas and also serves as flood protection.

The Cranzahl Dam was built between 1949 and 1952 near Sehmatal-Cranzahl and Bärenstein in the Ore Mountains to supply drinking water to Annaberg-Buchholz and the surrounding area. It was later expanded and renovated. Along with the Sosa Dam, it was one of the two major dam construction projects of the young GDR. Reflecting the spirit of the times, it was named the "Dam of Friendship" as a central youth project of the Free German Youth (FDJ). A memorial stone commemorates this.

Many hiking trails lead through this area up to the Bärenstein, offering fantastic views of the Ore Mountains.
