emergency well
A special feature of Laer, which is still reminiscent of a wooden paneling on the southern edge of the Paulbrink, is the emergency well. This was built after the great fire of 1767 and was originally a large, open water basin, to which a stone staircase led down. When the fire bell rang from the church tower, the residents came to the emergency well with their leather fire buckets and fire hooks to extinguish the fire with the chain of filled buckets reaching to the seat of the fire, as in Schiller's "Glocke":
