The real name is Argiroupoli (Αργυρούπολη = Silver Town). The lower, water-rich part of the village lies on the site of ancient Lappa (Αρχαία Λάππα), a very important city in Roman times that minted its own coins. There are many taverns in a moist, green atmosphere.
