The Old Castle in Buchenau is considered to be the ancestral seat of the former von Buchenau family, and was probably built on a rock outcrop in the 13th or 14th century. Parts of the circular wall and the surrounding moat have been preserved from the original complex. The aging buildings are from Eberhard von Buchenau, who is considered the builder of the Spiegel Castle in 1572, and from Conrad Hermann von Buchenau, the builder of the Seckendorff Castle in 1578. Both castles are still referred to as the Old Castle today.
