On May 27, 1878, the railway line between Drieslinter and Sint-Truiden was opened. A year and a half later, on September 10, 1879, the railway line between Sint-Truiden and Tongeren was also opened.
On September 29, 1957, passenger traffic on the line was discontinued. Goods traffic continued to run until the 1960s and 1970s, but it was gradually phased out. Goods traffic was still running between Sint-Truiden and Bernissem until 1988. After that, the tracks were gradually broken up between 1968 and 1989. A cycle path was built on the river bed over most of the distance.
The railway was built as a single track and was never electrified.
