Medieval fortification that is the city's most emblematic monument. Its Keep Tower, almost 40 metres high, is considered by some authors to be the tallest military tower in the country.
Beja Castle, and its Keep Tower in particular, is the city's best-known and most emblematic monument. It is a Gothic fortress whose construction began in the 13th century, shortly after the Christian conquest of the city, and continued through the 14th and possibly 15th centuries.
Standing out from the fortress complex is the imposing Keep Tower, almost forty metres high, considered by some experts to be a masterpiece of European Gothic military architecture.
In addition to the castle, the walls that, dating from the same period, surrounded the medieval city are still visible, with twenty-eight towers and their respective sections of the wall remaining.

Beja Castle, while resting on Roman fortifications, was rebuilt by king Dinis in 1310. This is the structure, part of the king´s reinforcement of national defences, that can now be seen.

During the 16th century, certain improvements were carried out resulting in the Manueline features that can be seen, for example, in the twinned tower windows that look out onto the Praça de Armas, the entrance to the castle.

The most significant aspect of the castle is the imposing Torre de Menagem (donjon), now the symbol of the city of Beja, with its battlements and narrow walkway running around the tower. Inside, there are three floors featuring ogival doors and worked vaults. The upper floor is reached by a 183º spiral staircase. At the top, there is one of the best views over the city and the surrounding region.

Its nearly 40-meter-high keep is considered by some historians to be the tallest military tower in the country. It can be climbed; for 2 euros, you can climb the 183 steps to the top and enjoy the wonderful view.
