The Beja Municipal Garden, or Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral Garden, is a public garden located in the urban area of Beja, near the city's historic district and the former Convent of S. Francisco. Built in 1880, it covers an area of 2 hectares and features a romantic architectural style inspired by the composition and harmony of its elements.
Previously, this garden served as vegetable gardens for the Convent and later as a military training ground in the 19th century.
While Beja was only a small historic urban area, this garden served as a meeting place or public promenade for the city's inhabitants.
Entering this garden from the west, we find a statue of Lidador, and walking east, we end up at a monument commemorating his death, a panel of colorful tiles, covered by a terrace and a viewpoint, and next to a multi-sports field.
This garden also features a large duck pond and a children's playground representing a small Alentejo hill. We can also see the 5-meter-high stone statue of Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, O Lidador, who conquered Beja from the Moors in a famous battle.
This well-maintained park is perfect for a relaxing stroll, offering plenty of shady areas, benches, and lush greenery. It's filled with beautiful flowers, statues, and a charming fountain, creating a tranquil atmosphere. The octagonal pavilion also serves as a jukebox, often hosting football matches or concerts at decent volume.
