St. John's Collegiate Church (next to St. Peter's Cathedral), Regensburg
History of the origins of St. John's Collegiate Church
Originally, the associated baptismal church, dedicated to John the Baptist, was located west of Regensburg Cathedral. Bishop Kuno I built the collegiate foundation of St. John on this site around 1127.
The church in question was, however, demolished in favor of the westward extension of the cathedral in accordance with an agreement made in 1380 between Bishop Konrad VI of Haimburg (1368-1381) and the chapter of St. John. At the end of the 14th century, it was built as an east-facing two-aisled collegiate church at its current location, attached to a tower completed under Bishop John I (1384-1409), and an additional northern extension was added here. The church, which had two naves since then, was remodeled between 1765 and 1769 into the current hall building, which was closed off in the east with a polygonal choir.
The church pews from around 1713, the organ case from around 1730 and the figures of the two Johns, John Nepomuk and perhaps also Anthony, made around 1730 and still placed on the high altar in 1876, were taken from the old church. There were also three side altars, namely the cross altar on the left and the Mary altar from 1630 with the panel painting of the "Beautiful Mary" by Albrecht Altdorfer that was connected to it until 1938, and the Sebastian altar from 1652, also placed at the old location, with the late Gothic side figures of Stephen and Nicholas.
A new fresco program was created in 1768 by Johann Nepomuk Schöpf, of which only two frescoes were uncovered and restored in 1976/77. In addition, the high altar painting with the two Johns painted by Schöpf and the choir stalls made by Georg Christoph Garri, Johann Valentin Dirr and Johann Ignaz Andres as well as the collegiate crypt documented from 1769 were created.

The collegiate church of St. John in Regensburg is the spiritual center of the collegiate foundation of St. John, founded in 1127. It is dedicated to Saints John the Baptist (commemoration day: June 24th) and John the Evangelist (commemoration day: December 27th). The church is located in the immediate vicinity of St. Peter's Cathedral at Krauterermarkt 5. It lies between the cathedral square in the south and the bishop's court in the north. The collegiate church has had an eventful history over the centuries. The original Ottonian building had to be demolished in favor of a western extension of the Regensburg Cathedral. This resulted in a Gothic building on the site of the current church, which underwent a radical baroque transformation in the 1760s. After a fire in 1887, the church was rebuilt in neo-baroque forms.
