The small town is located between Beerfelden and Eberbach in the deep Gammelbach valley on both sides of the local road (Neckartalstraße).
It has about 910 inhabitants.
Due to the narrow valley, Gammelsbach is only about 500 m wide, but almost 4 km long.
The ruined castle of Freienstein is located above the village on a mountain slope. Due to the state of disrepair, it is only partially accessible.
