The surf cliff in Eckelsheim - which you inevitably pass on the "Beach Path of the Senses" circular route - was discovered in the 1990s and is one of the most important geological and paleontological finds in Europe of the last few decades. The approx. 30 million year old surf cliff at Eckelsheim cannot be preserved or presented in person, as it would have completely fallen victim to weathering within a few years. However, in order to use it for tourism and to make it tangible and to preserve it for the public and science, the local community of Eckelsheim has created a replica that is true to the original. This is to be staged in the immediate vicinity of the existing, well-received and barrier-free "Beach Path of the Senses" and the original location.

There was once a sea here around 30 million years ago.

Next to the Bell Church lies the Beach Path of the Senses. It is a 1.6 km circular path between the Bell Church and the gravel pit. Numerous panels provide information about the geological development of the former coastal region, when the Mainz Basin was flooded by a subtropical sea 30 million years ago. This area formed the coastline. A surf cliff was excavated above the path, but after the research was completed, it was filled in again to preserve it for posterity.
The Beach Path of the Senses and the three coastal paths are definitely worth a visit.
