The apartments in the settlement were originally reserved for Thyssen workers. The houses were built on a former premises of the Grillowerke - exactly where the zinc works once stood. The houses were designed by the Berlin architect Max Taut and were planned/built between 1957 and 1963.

Vacancy rate 80% before acquisition by Brune Group in June 2016, now 10%. The apartments have been renovated or completely refurbished and cost 6.50 to 8.50 per square meter rent.

Background: the wealthy architect Walter Brune, who died a good year ago at an advanced age, had built the first German shopping mall based on the USA model in 1973 with the Rhein-Ruhr-Zentrum in Mülheim. After realizing that these malls on the green field are causing massive damage to the neighboring cities, he became "from Saul to Paulus" and has since fought against these business centers outside of the inner cities, including the CentrO Oberhausen and the planned outlet center in this district of Duisburg- Marxloh. The zinc hut settlement, which was run down and largely empty at the time, was to be replaced by a parking lot for this center. In a personal conversation, Dido asked Walter Brune: "And what did you do to save the settlement?" Answer: "I bought them".
