The Affondatore di Villanova is one of the most important karst phenomena in southern Italy. The rock forms an elliptical abyss of about a hundred meters with sheer walls. In this cave the high-altitude waters are collected, which sink until they resurface at the Bussento spring, a little further down, in Varco la Peta.
