Agathenburg (Low German Gothenborg) is a municipality in the district of Stade in Lower Saxony in Germany. In the village of Lieth, the Swedish Governor-General Hans Christoph von Königsmarck, governor of the Duchy of Bremen and Verden, acquired an older estate in 1652 and built a country palace, which he named Schloss Agathenburg after his wife Agathe von Lehsten. The village of Lieth has also borne this name ever since. The Königsmarcks come from the village of the same name in the Altmark, Hans Christoph received the title of count from Queen Christine of Sweden. He became the grandfather of Count Philipp Christoph von Königsmarck, known for his relationships with Princess Sophie Dorothea of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and of Countess Aurora von Königsmarck, the favorite of Augustus the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. Aurora von Königsmarck often came to Agathenburg from Stade as a child and young girl until her mother moved to Sweden in 1680 and spent many days there.
