A castle was mentioned in a document in 1365 as a sovereign fief. Beginning in the early 16th century, the property was owned by the Protestant Kornfail family for over 170 years and was converted into a moated castle and expanded during the Renaissance.

In 1916, Heinrich Mendl acquired the palace complex. Heinrich Mendl owned the Ankerbrot company together with his brother Fritz.

After the Second World War, in 1953, it becomes the "Ankerbrot rest home" and loses importance in the 1960s.

Today it belongs to the municipality of Würmla, since 2003 after the completion of the renovation the municipal office, the library and several residential units have been in the castle.
