Technically, this beautifully maintained walking trail is known as the Emergency Vehicle Access Road, or EVAR, for nearby Juneau International Airport.
But most people call this pathway the Airport Dike Trail — because it runs along the airport's dike — or the Mendenhall Refuge Trail, because it passes through Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge. Many describe it as wheelchair and stroller-accessible, but you might want to use caution as the pathway mostly consists of hard-packed gravel.
The proximity to the wetlands refuge makes this a fantastic place for birding during spring, summer and fall. According to Audubon Alaska, this is one of the most-visiting birding sites in the Juneau area. On relatively clear days, you can also enjoy expansive views across the Mendenhall Wetlands.
