    The maintained section of this trail ends after two miles, at a rocky outcrop that offers fine overlooks of Mendenhall Glacier from the west side. A social (unofficial) trail branches off to the right continues for some distance toward the glacier, or you can continue hiking upward on a primitive trail that leads onto the flanks of Mount McGinnis.

    Please heed the Forest Service's warnings to not explore off-trail on the rocky peninsula looking out over Mendenhall Glacier. The thick brush all around you covers rough ground and deep rock crevices.

    The forest service states that every year there are at least 10 to 12 rescues of hikers who went off-trail in this area, with 75 percent of those rescues involving injuries.
