In 2007 a family of beavers dammed the Mederbach. Where previously only a small stream flowed, one of the largest beaver lakes in Switzerland is now expanding.
The canton of Zurich, the municipality of Marthalen and Pro Natura signed a forest reserve contract for 50 years in 2013. This means that no forestry has been allowed in the core zone of the reserve since the beginning of 2013.
