Windmill Decroos is a post mill that was built in 1905 by Kamiel Decroos. After destruction by a heavy storm in 1990, it was decided during the land consolidation of 1996 to rebuild the mill. The mill is not in its original place. The mill is now 8 meters high and has a flight of 8 meters. A couple of stones with a diameter of 1.10 meters rotates in the mill. Nice to take a break here and leave with a stroke of the mill back in the right direction.

In the West Flemish polder region, about 20 polder farms used to have their own small windmill in their yard. Usually these were post mills from the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century. Most of those windmills disappeared before the First World War and only one of them has really made it to our days: the windmill Decroos from Eggewaartskapelle.

It's advisable to check the latest bus schedules and routes with De Lijn, the Flemish public transport company, before your visit.

Are there specific walking or cycling routes that start or pass by Molentje Decroos?

Yes, Molentje Decroos is a popular landmark along several walking and cycling routes through the West Flemish polder region. The flat landscape makes it ideal for leisurely tours. While there isn't one single 'Molenpad' officially named after it, many local routes incorporate the mill as a scenic stop. You can find various suggested routes that pass through Eggewaartskapelle and feature the mill, often highlighting the tranquil countryside and other historical points of interest.

Is Molentje Decroos suitable for a winter visit, and does the landscape change significantly?

Molentje Decroos can be visited in winter, offering a different, often serene, experience of the polder landscape. While the mill is less likely to be operational during colder months, its historical presence remains. The surrounding fields may be bare or, occasionally, covered in frost, providing unique photographic opportunities. Dress warmly, as the open polder can be windy and cold.

What facilities are available for families visiting Molentje Decroos?

Molentje Decroos itself is a historical monument, offering an educational experience about traditional milling. There are no dedicated family facilities like playgrounds directly at the mill. However, the flat, open landscape around it is excellent for children to explore safely, and the sight of the mill turning can be captivating for all ages. It's a great spot for a picnic or a gentle family walk.

What is the policy for bringing dogs to Molentje Decroos and the surrounding area?

What makes Molentje Decroos unique compared to other windmills in Belgium?

These small, open-foot post mills were common in the 19th and early 20th centuries for private use, grinding grain for self-sufficiency. Most disappeared before WWI, making Decroos a rare and authentic glimpse into this specific agricultural history. Its operational status, maintained by a voluntary miller, further enhances its uniqueness.

How difficult is the terrain around Molentje Decroos for walking or cycling?

The terrain around Molentje Decroos is characteristic of the West Flemish polder region: predominantly flat and open. This makes it very easy and accessible for walking, cycling, and even trail running. Can I see the mill in operation, and how often does this happen?

Yes, you can often see Molentje Decroos in operation, especially during the summer months. The mill is maintained by a voluntary miller, and its operational status depends on wind conditions and the miller's presence. While there isn't a fixed schedule, checking with local tourism offices or the City of Veurne for specific milling days or events is the best way to catch it in action.

What is the historical significance of Molentje Decroos being rebuilt multiple times?

The repeated rebuilding of Molentje Decroos highlights its enduring historical and cultural significance. It was originally built in 1905, but suffered storm damage in 1980 and collapsed again in 1990. This resilience underscores its value as a protected monument and a tangible link to the region's agricultural heritage, ensuring future generations can experience this rare piece of history.
