The landscape of the municipality is characterized by small, curved watercourses and dead-straight canals, Fehn bridges, green dykes, historical wall hedges and the unique freshwater mudflats of the north-west. Due to the proximity to the North Sea, there is a moderate maritime climate all year round. In general, summer and autumn are wetter, while winter and spring are somewhat drier. A number of watercourses run through the municipality, which are connected to the North Sea via Jümme, Leda and Ems depending on the tides. The Augustfehn Canal, begun in 1840 to drain the moor and as a future transport route for industrialization, is no longer navigable today. The districts of Augustfehn I, Augustfehn II and Augustfehn III line up along it. Since the renovation in 1999, the canal has been subject to the tide.
