This huge flywheel of a steam engine marks another part of Harkort's history. The steam engine flywheel comes from the former Harkort steelworks. When you stand in front of it, you can understand how industry has changed the town and its people. Today, we can only imagine the energy and power with which these wheels were moved back then.

This is where the Harkort-Eicken steelworks used to be, which emerged from Rohstahlhammer, founded in 1779 by the brothers Johann Caspar and Peter Nikolaus Harkort. It can be seen as the origin of today's Deutsche Edelstahlwerke GmbH. In addition to the power plant, the administration building, a few workshops, a 40 m high former water tower (since 2009 without a tank) and the steam engine flywheel of a bar steel rolling mill put into operation in 1893 still bear witness to the existence of the Schöntal works.
