    Nice memorial...
Tried but not broken or Disaster Monument (1970) is a memorial at the Zuidhavenpoort.
    Background
At the end of 1962, the suggestion box of the municipality of Zierikzee received a suggestion to erect a monument in memory of the flood disaster of 1953. A Disaster Monument Committee was put together, which committed itself to this. In 1963, the committee had a memorial column placed at the cemetery. At the end of 1964, a number of Zeeland artists were approached to come up with a design for a monument in the center. The design with the motto Tried but not broken, by the local sculptor Ad Braat, was very popular. Braat initially wanted to make a spatial monument in freestone, but the committee preferred a figurative image. He therefore came up with a design of a standing woman with her hand raised, protectively hiding a child behind her.
The design was executed in bronze and placed at the Zuidhavenpoort. The sculpture has a rubble stone as a base, supplied by the Schouwen-Duiveland water board. In the stone is the motto Tried but not broken. On February 1, 1970, the monument was unveiled by Queen's Commissioner Jan van Aartsen.
