"The legend of the knight on the Beilstein

Anyone who used to travel the country road towards Lautern as a merchant had to pay the knight on the Beilstein a toll. Nobody liked to give away this money. The merchants therefore sought a detour around the city.
But the Beilsteiner was lurking at the Schmelzer Graben in the Hagelgrund. He took the goods from the merchants who avoided the main street and had many a pepper bag imprisoned in his castle. If no ransom was paid, the prisoners were beheaded.
But the Beilsteiner Ritter still walks through the Schmelzer Graben at midnight to this day, carrying his head under his arm as punishment for the atrocities he inflicted on others."
