The Gerwische begins today at the Elster weir in the Döllnitz district of Schkopau as a stone pool. It runs roughly to the southwest in the Elster flood bed, turns northwest at Kollenbey and takes up the Markgraben on the left, which branches off the Steinlache on the right again after about 150 meters and flows into the Weiße Elster.

About a kilometer after this branch and northwest of Kollenbey, the Steinlache reaches its original riverbed, in which it runs as Steinlache to the Planena district of Halle and, roughly keeping the flow direction, to Beesen as Gerwische.
