The blessed work of the Grand Ducal Baden Sanatorium and Nursing Home in Illenau began in 1842. Dr. Christian Roller, the first director, developed the concept of this institution, which was "novel in its layout and progressive in its organization and healing methods." Building officer Hans Voss, a student of Weinbrenner, congenially implemented Roller's ideas in architecture and created an architecturally valuable building ensemble in the style of Classicism.

“Only those who know the past can shape the future!” Based on this idea, an “Illenau Memorial Trail” was created. It largely follows the former cemetery path on which the deceased were led to their final resting place in the nearby forest cemetery. Information boards accompany you to the Illenau district, which is historically, art-historically and botanically valuable.
They are intended to convey the history and spirit of this facility, which was once described as the most progressive sanatorium and nursing home in Europe.
