The church is in Baroque style, with a facade in sandstone tuff, built on three towers: two bell towers and another, where there is a statue of San Francesco, in white marble.

The interior has a single nave, in which there are some frescoes by Sebastiano Consoli, a statue of the Madonna and a wooden crucifix from the 18th century, made by Vittorio Cardinale.

The church has a large pipe organ, built in 1948 by the Mascioni di Cuvio organ company: the instrument has 2 keyboards of 58 keys each, a concave-radial pedalboard of 30 notes and 28 sound registers, with a total of almost 2000 pipes. Previously, a second organ was located in the presbytery, which was completely destroyed by the bombings of World War II.

The site where the basilica of the Immaculate Conception stands was used as a sacred place from the fourteenth century, when a small church and a convent of Franciscan friars were erected at the behest of the Chiaramonte family, the remains of which are still visible next to those of the basilica .

The building, initially known as the church of San Francesco, took on its current form in 1788 and was subsequently named after the Immaculate Conception and elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1940, at the behest of Pope Pius XII.

It was damaged during the Second World War, but was restored at the instigation of the parish priest Monsignor Michele Sclafani.

Every year the feast of the Immaculate Conception takes place there, deeply felt in Agrigento.

Best to visit in the morning. I only ever saw it closed in the afternoon.
