Salvador Allende Memorial, Donaupark
Memorial to Salvador Allende in the form of a portrait bust on a natural stone base, in front of it a memorial stone with an inscription. The memorial was designed by Jaime Carvajal and erected on the initiative of Chileans living in Vienna. The ceremonial unveiling took place on September 2, 2005.
The inscription on the memorial stone in German and Spanish reads:
“SOONER RATHER THAN LATER THE WIDE STREETS WILL OPEN FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WILL CREATE A BETTER SOCIETY WITH DIGNITY.”
WORDS FROM ALLENDE’S LAST SPEECH BEFORE HE AND THOUSANDS DIED IN THE
MILITARY COUP OF SEPTEMBER 11, 1973. THE COUP WAS A REACTION
TO HIS DEMOCRATIC FIGHT FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE.

The “Salvador Allende Memorial” stands in the Danube Park, within sight of the Danube Tower. It was unveiled in 2005.
