The origins of the Mariakerk go back to the end of the 15th century, when this late Gothic church building was erected. The church tower is even older, with a history dating back to circa 1200. As a national monument, the church is a valuable historical heritage.
During the centuries, the Mariakerk has had to endure various events. For example, both the church and the tower have been hit by serious fires. After a fire in 1594, the church was carefully restored. Later, in 1956, the tower was partially destroyed by a lightning strike, but the tower was rebuilt the following year. Fortunately, the church has been restored several times over the years to maintain its splendor and historical value. The last restorations were carried out in the second half of the 20th century, with the restoration from 1976 to 1978 made possible in part by a subsidy from the then Ministry of Social Affairs as part of the unemployment campaign. A second restoration phase took place between 1989 and 1995, which included restoring the men's pews in the church.
