This is where the so-called Gäulsgraben ran until the Mühlenroda was filled in before World War II. The western part of the ditch lies somewhat lower than the Mühlenroda (Plate 15). It can therefore be assumed that the Rodau flowed here before human settlement and was only diverted to the Oberwiese in the Middle Ages to operate the mills. As a result, the lower original stream bed became a swampy area, which probably did not carry water all year round. The exact origin of the name "Gäulsgraben" is not known. The name certainly comes from Gaul (plural of Gaul, horse), which was a derogatory term for this animal species. The ditch was probably used as a watering place for animals in the Middle Ages. The drawing on the right shows that Ober-Roden used to be traversed by several ditches in a west-east direction, which all reunited to form the Rodau at the level of today's sewage treatment plant. From around the bridge to the school, the Gäulsgraben was until the 18th century identical to the part of the Rodau that supplied the Hanauer Mühle (Table 26) with water and leads to flooding of the adjacent properties. Especially after such heavy rainfall, you can see from the red color of the water that the name Rodau was derived from red water. This clearly visible coloring sometimes occurs due to the source in the Messeler Hügelland with its red lying ferrous rock.

The Gäulsgraben has been made a little more attractive in recent years.
