One of the most impressive climbing crags is the Falkenstein, at 378 m high and rising 80 m above its base. The rock's popularity among climbers is reflected in the more than 70 ascent routes, most of which are difficult and offer numerous climbing opportunities from the crack to the chimney. This is where the famous and popular "Schusterweg" (Cobbler's Path) is located. The first ascent of the Falkenstein in 1864 is considered the birth of climbing in Saxon Switzerland.

In the Middle Ages, the Falkenstein served as a signal tower for the rock castle on the Neuer Wildenstein.
