The “Lower Gate” marks the end of the former city fortifications to the north.

The Lower Gate, which at times housed the city prison in four cells on two levels, once resembled the Upper Gate and, like the latter, had a multi-storey structure, but no dome with a clock, but a simple roof with a crank at the sides. In later times, the dimensions of the gate no longer corresponded to the larger wagons of the increasing commercial traffic. Carts often had to be unloaded, sometimes paving stones had to be removed to allow passage. In 1837, the magistrate therefore submitted an application to demolish the gate, which had also become dilapidated by then. The Royal Bavarian government permitted the demolition, but decreed that a new gate system had to be built afterwards, which would do justice to the character of a walled city.
The Lower Gate was then rebuilt in its current form as a simple round-arch gate system with imitation towers on both sides and battlements made of red sandstone.
