The approximately 600 km long Main cycle path leads along the Main through Hesse and Franconia, through natural and scenic areas. The cycle path is 90% asphalted and easy to cycle on.

From its two sources in the Fichtelgebirge and Franconian Switzerland to its confluence with the Rhine, it goes from Bayreuth to Mainz.

Not far from Bayreuth is the source of the red Rhine (Lindenhardter Forst) which then merges with the white Main at Kulmbach (Steinenhausen) (the source of the white Main rises on the eastern slope of the Ochsenkopf) to form the actual Main.

At 72 km, the red Main is longer than the white Main. Which in turn carries more water than the red Main.

The Main cycle path is peppered with sights and towns and cities worth seeing and can easily be cycled in just a few short stages.
